40 a year Description Performs professional work planning, organizing and directing a variety of recreation programs, activities, special events, and related work as required.
Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Director of Parks and Recreation.
Division supervision is exercised over assigned personnel.
Essential Functions Administers, develops, organizes, directs and evaluates, with activity supervisors, recreational programs for all segments, groups and ages of the community.
Assists in the recruitment and selection process.
Approves candidates for hire; allocates personnel resources.
Trains, instructs and assigned work to division personnel.
Evaluates employee performance.
Disciplines division personnel; recommends salary increases and terminations as warranted.
Prepares and submits division budget; monitors divisional expenditures; authorizes requests for supplies, materials and personnel.
Visits program sites and observes operation and effectiveness.
Conducts research and prepares various reports.
Receives and responds to citizen inquires and complaints.
Participates in promotional activities.
Makes public presentations to various civic groups; serves on and/or participates in various committees.
Oversees and participates in planning, organizing and implementing special events.
Performs related tasks as required.
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree with coursework in recreation, sports management, or related field and moderate experience in one or more of the major fields of organized recreation programs including supervisory experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum 5 years' experience preferred.
Thorough knowledge of the philosophies, principles and practices of professional recreation work.
Thorough knowledge of human behavior of individuals in groups participating in recreation activities.
Thorough knowledge of the social behavior of all age groups.
Ability to efficiently schedule and coordinate use of recreational facilities.
Ability to assess recreational needs of the community and to develop and implement appropriate programs.
Ability to plan, coordinate, assign and review the activities of assigned personnel.
Ability to prepare reports; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, activity participants and the general public.
Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
Physical Demands This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing and occasionally requires standing, walking and using hands to finger, handle or feel; work has no special vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.
